How Game of Thrones Became The King of Marketing

Game of Thrones is back on UK television tonight, and you might have already seen it if you’re in the US - you lucky things!

But what we’re really here to chat about are the amazing marketing tactics we’re being inundated with in the lead up to the series launch in the UK.

Below are some of the best we've come across so far.

Sky Atlantic

You may have noticed this tweet being promoted on your Twitter newsfeed today, and it’s a weather forecast ready for tonight’s episode.

We love the way they’ve combined the classic weather forecast with the famous Game of Thrones map, and it's an excellent and innovative way to get the word out there.

Plus, we really love the weather puns too!


The Metro

If you picked up the Metro today you might have noticed that the cover’s looking a little different.

As you can see, underneath the usual Metro header you’ll see The Westeros Gazette where you’ll find a recap of the previous season as well as other Game of Thrones content such as adverts for the Night's Watch, the weather, and even a Pet of the Day space!

National Rail

National rail also contributed something a little special this morning for the Game of Thrones Launch. As you can see from the images below, they had a band performing in one of their train stations to promote the upcoming episode to commuters on their way to the office.

It’s certainly an exciting way to travel to work, especially first thing on a dreary Monday morning.

The Cast and Crew

Of course, all the cast and crew have also been getting involved with promoting the episode.

Below you’ll see an Instagram post from Maisie Williams showing the types of Game of Thrones snacks she’s experienced, as well as a Tweet from the official GoT Twitter account encouraging everyone to share their favourite GIF.

They're both great ways to get people chatting about the upcoming episode on social media!

Gwendoline Christie who plays Brienne has also been drumming up anticipation for both sides of the pond - spoiler free too for the UK folk (Thanks Gwendoline!) We especially adore the little Iron Throne emojis.

If you weren’t in the mood for the new GoT episode tonight, you certainly will be now. Game of Thrones have exhausted every marketing avenue we can think of, and it’s certainly got us all excitable here in the office!

Now everyone, cross your fingers and hope Jon Snow isn’t really dead…
