Hilton Hotels & Marriott International Top List of World’s Biggest Hotel Chains

Hilton Hotels & Marriott International Top List of World’s Biggest Hotel Chains

In the July/August edition of Hotels magazine, an exciting new survey has been released which features a list of the top 325 hotel chains in the world - the top 2 of which work with pixel8.

Organised according to number of rooms and hotels, Hotels has succeeded in putting together a fascinating snapshot of just how much the leisure industry has grown in the last 12 months alone.

But what really makes this new survey interesting is Hilton Hotels, which has finally managed to overtake Marriott International as the biggest hotel chain in the world. There have also been several surprise entries into the magazine’s top 50 - including from brands that have recently emerged from China and the Far East.

So, if you want a quick run-down of Hotels’ new survey, have a look below.

Hilton Hotels and Marriott International

Having amassed an incredible 715,062 hotel rooms in 2014, Hilton has achieved the seemingly impossible and surpassed competitor Marriott International - who has added (an equally impressive) 714,765 hotel rooms in just 12 months.

In addition to IHG (710,295), this holy trinity of hotel brands stand above competitors by a significant margin. For instance, Best Western International also managed to squeeze into the top 10 with a comparatively few 303,522.

Here is a list of which hotels managed to squeeze into the top 20:

  1. Hilton Hotels - 715,062 rooms

  2. Marriott International - 714,765 rooms

  3. IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) - 710,295 rooms

  4. Wyndham Hotel Group - 660,826 rooms

  5. Choice Hotels International - 500,000 rooms

  6. AccorHotels - 482,296 rooms

  7. Plateno Hotels Group - 442,296 rooms

  8. Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide - 354,225 rooms

  9. Shanghai Jin Jiang International Hotel Group - 352,538 rooms

  10. Best Western International - 303,522 rooms

  11. Home Inns & Hotel Management - 296,955

  12. China Lodging Group - 209,955 rooms

  13. Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group - 172,234 rooms

  14. Hyatt Hotels Corp. - 155,265 rooms

  15. GreenTree Inns Hotel Management Group - 142,038 rooms

  16. GG Hospitality - 115,41 rooms

  17. Melia Hotels International - 98,225 rooms

  18. Magnuson Hotels Worldwide - 96,225 rooms

  19. Westmont Hospitality Group - 92,343 rooms

  20. LQ Management - 86,500 rooms

Growth in China

On the most interesting developments to emerge from this study, however, was the growing presence of China on the world’s international hotel stage.

Both Plateno Hotels Group and Jin Jiang Hotels made it into the top 10, with Plateno jumping an impressive five spaces in just 12 months. Equally as impressive, Eastern Crown Hotels Group China - which did not feature in 2014’s Hotels edition - has leapt into 38th position.

Thanks, in part, to the growth of China’s middle class economy, the increased volume of hotels in the Far East is a strong testament to the renewed optimism within the hotel sector.

Furthemore, this fascinating development has proven that the leisure and tourism industry is undergoing increased growth once again. From a marketer’s perspective, this is particularly welcome news - especially if you’re a brand manager looking to increase your budget in the future.
