Rachel Murray: My First Two Weeks At Pixel8

Okay, I have a confession to make.

When I first started at Pixel8, I really wasn’t sure what to expect.

I’d heard a few things: the design team was incredible, everyone was a bit mad, and something about a dog.

But I can honestly say that my first two weeks have exceeded my expectations.

Even though it hasn’t been long, I’ve genuinely loved my time so far at Pixel8. Everyone has been warm, welcoming, and extremely helpful - plus no-one has made fun of me for being Scottish yet.

On the first day, I had the chance to sit down with everyone and gain a better understanding of what the ‘pixels’ did on a daily basis. This was my first real experience of seeing what an art and design team can achieve within a branding agency - and I have to say, it's pretty damn impressive.

Over the next few days, I was thrown keyboard-first into creating content for Pixel8’s clients - including their sister-company, Brandit.* This was a great opportunity to learn about this amazing software platform and come up with some content marketing ideas for the future.

*In case you don’t know, Brandit is a software platform that allows businesses to create and manage their own branded artwork in the easiest way possible. I’ve been promised a go of it next week. Updates to follow.

I was also given the chance to help develop a new content marketing strategy for Pixel8 and Brandit. This involves conducting lots of competitor research, learning more about our customers, and going a bit mad with Excel - which is right up my street.

Meet Wilbur; my desk buddy

In terms of writing, my lovely co-worker Sian has given me responsibility for each step in the content creation process - from planning, to writing, and then promoting the content across different social platforms (she calls it ‘seeding’, which I’ve never heard of before; I think it’s delightful). So far, it has been a wonderful way to brush up on my social media skills and sink my teeth into some PR, something which I hope to implement across our accounts in the future.

In addition to this, I’ve also had the chance to meet with one of Pixel8’s clients and manage a new email marketing campaign. I’m currently in the process of gathering consumer data together and doing some industry research, and I can’t wait to see the outcome in the coming months.

On a more personal level, anyone who knows me well will know I’m not a huge of networking (although I have yet to meet anyone who actually is). But on Thursday 29th, a few of us at Pixel8 attended a wonderful event hosted by Resonate Connect. This was an extremely worthwhile cause and - even though I’ve been in Manchester for 18 months now - it was probably the first time I truly appreciated the opportunities this city has to offer. Myself, Sian, and Roland each signed our name up to help however we can - and I really hope this is something I can pursue further in the future.

Over the past two weeks, what I’ve really grown to like about working at Pixel8 is that I have the independence to pursue the things I’m most passionate about: like exploring new ways of communicating with audiences and working alongside people who genuinely love what they do. It’s been a short, but sweet, learning curve and I’m thrilled to be part of this new team.

Wish me luck!
