10 Tips for Getting Started On The Digital Marketing Career Path

Digital marketing is a relatively young sector when you compare it to some of the more well-known ones such as regular marketing or the likes of retail. But because of this, it can sometimes be hard to know where to begin when you want to enter this type of career.

Well, here at pixel8, a lot of us have been there, done that and got the T-Shirt, which is why we wanted to give something back to those who are just getting started in the world of digital marketing.

We hope you find our tips below very useful when it comes to finding your perfect career... and who knows, you could be working with us one day!

1. Do Your Research

The first thing to do when considering the digital marketing career path is to do some research. If you do this, you’ll be able to understand all the different parts of the industry as well as the individual roles.

You could go for a digital marketing executive role, which will see you work across a wide range of digital marketing efforts. As well as this, you can also specialise in certain areas, allowing you to dive a little deeper.

Whether you love social media, writing content, SEO or would like the chance to deal with clients as an Account Manager - there are many different areas in Digital Marketing that will allow you to find the perfect job which suits your skill set.

2. Look For Apprentice Schemes

Although they don’t always offer the best pay, an apprentice scheme can be a fantastic way to open doors in the digital marketing world.

One of the hardest parts of getting involved in this sector is getting a foot in the door - and an apprentice scheme can lead to full-time work as well as opportunities elsewhere.

So don't be put off by the word 'apprentice' and get stuck in!

3. Get Some Work Experience

If you don’t fancy becoming an apprentice, but want to get some experience in this industry another way, then we can't recommend work experience enough to any budding digital marketers.

If you can work for a digital marketing company for a bit, even if it’s for free, you can make connections, get much-needed experience and also have some great things to talk about on your CV.

It's a win, win experience for all. Plus, if you make a good impression you could end up working there one day too if a vacancy came up!

4. Consider Education

Although you don’t formally need any education to get into digital marketing, it can be a good idea to arm yourself with relevant qualifications.

Degrees are a good place to start, especially if they're in a relevant area that will help you push ahead.

Personally, I have a degree in Creative Writing with English Literature -  and it set me up with great content writing skills that I use on a day to day basis!

5. Don’t Give Up Hope

The digital marketing door can be a really tough one to beat down, but even if you get rejected a few times - don’t give up.

Always remember that if it was easy, everyone would be doing it.

Have some self-belief and keep pushing for your digital marketing goal and one day it will happen for you.

6. Look For Work Direct On Agency Websites

Job websites and agencies can help you find work, but if you really want to get a real chance of being employed then the best thing you can do is visit agency/business websites.

By doing this you’ll know you’re applying for a job that actually exists - not just one recruiters are using to get your details and CV on file.

You'll also know you're going for precisely the type of job you want, rather than a recruitment agency trying to fit you into any role so that their business can get paid!

7. Don’t Undervalue The Importance of LinkedIn

If you don’t have a LinkedIn account - set one up now and start making connections.

If you keep an eye on your wall you could see some new roles coming on minutes after they’re launched, and if you get in there straight away you could really be in with a chance.

Companies also post jobs on LinkedIn so do a regular search and see what you can come up with. You might also find LinkedIn emailing you updates with jobs too if they match them to your profile.

LinkedIn has also just launched a job app, so make sure you download that onto your phone too.

8. Make Sure That You Have An Epic CV

As always, you are going to need to have a good CV if you want to get ahead in this sector - but how do you build it out when you're starting?

Well, even if you don’t have much work experience you can go out and create your own.

Have a friend who needs a social account running? Jump on it. Know someone who could do with someone to write a blog for them? Put yourself forwards.

Any examples you can show will assist you with securing a digital marketing role.

9. Submit Examples Of Your Work With Your Application

When you apply for a role it’s always best to submit examples of your work and any Digital Marketing achievements you have gained.

Don’t be afraid to blow your own trumpet here - you want to stand out and make people pay attention so it’s OK to brag (just don’t come across as arrogant!)

Also, remember to take these examples to your interview too - employers tend to be more impressed with a paper copy of what you can do, too, whether it's content you've written or some particularly epic social responses you've had!

10. Be Prepared For Everything In The Interview

When you start to interview for Digital Marketing roles, be aware that there might actually be tests you need to do. This is especially true in the content writer role, where it’s not uncommon for people to ask for you to complete a writing test right there and then in the room.

So remember - be prepared for everything and keep your cool! If you know you could be presented with a test, you're definitely going to be more likely to relax and perform.
